Secularism – The Challenge of a Generation

In case you are not already aware, this coming November, the Legault government will table a bill inspired by the recommendations of the Committee on Secularism. This legislation could profoundly reshape the relationship between the State and religious communities in Quebec. Key issues at stake include the taxation of places of worship, the loss of tax exemptions and charitable donation credits, as well as new restrictions on access to public spaces. Such measures, which would further marginalize faith in the public sphere, risk having devastating effects on the life and mission of our churches and Christian organizations.

Like many religious Quebecers, PAOC Pastors are concerned about the recommendations resulting from the Rousseau-Pelchat report on secularism. Secularism should protect the neutrality of the state, not restrict religious freedom. However, these recommendations risk weakening our churches and their social role!

It is not too late to act: we invite all of you to voice – as soon as possible – your concerns to your local Member of the National Assembly, or by supporting the social media campaign by our church partners the Réseau évangélique du Québec (REQ).
